Water oxidation is traditionally performed over IrO2 and RuO2 owing to their high stability at low pH compared to molecular O2 evolution catalysts. The low stability of molecular complexes in acids limits their industrial exploitation as anodes in water-splitting devices, where high current densities and proton conductivity are required. Herein, an existing Co(1,10-phenanthroline)2 complex film is engineered to improve its pH-stability via extra OH substituents on the ligand, i.e. 1,10-phenanthroline-4,7-diol. This novel Co(1,10-phenanthroline-4,7-diol)2 complex film is active for water oxidation at low overpotentials and stable at low pH. Since the calculated water oxidation overpotentials of both complexes are similar, the difference in water oxidation activity is attributed to a smaller charge transfer resistance, which originates from a different anchoring style to the electrode via the OH groups of the ligand. This result is supported by electrochemical impedance measurements. The high pH-stability of the Co(1,10-phenanthroline-4,7-diol)2 film is computationally rationalized by a high crystal formation energy observed in DFT calculations. In summary, an acid-stable and active cobalt-based metal-organic film is reported that competes well with most reported earth-abundant catalysts for water oxidation under similar conditions.

The generation of these morphologies could be interpreted partly in terms of the degree of curvature and the accretion type induced by various topological defects.

The synthesis of TS-1 zeolite with controllable crystal sizes has been successfully scaled up by using the suspension of nanosized S-1 as seed in a TPABr-template hydrothermal system. Even under poor stirring condition, the suspended seeds can be easily dispersed in the mixture of zeolite precursor. Therefore the synthesis shows a very good reproducibility when scaled up from 2 L to 500 L, and the crystal size of TS-1 zeolite can be exactly controlled and changed in a wide range by only changing seed amount. Using this TS-1 zeolite through large-scale synthesis as material, the catalyst was prepared by modification and used in propylene epoxidation. The yield of propylene oxide based on H2O2and propylene reaches 96.5% and 64.3%, respectively, which is superior to that of nanosized TS-1. Though the TS-1 samples synthesized with dried nanosized S-1 seed are similar to the samples synthesized with suspended seeds on the lab scale, the synthesis process using dried seeds shows a low reproducibility on the large scale. This research also implies the low cost and high energy efficiency of the production of TS-1 by using suspended seeds in large-scale process.

A new tunable laser based on a photoresponsive chiral liquid crystal emulsion is reported. Such a laser can be reversibly photo-tuned in a wide spectral range of 112 nm (566-678 nm), and it simultaneously possesses stable emission performance and quasi-continuous tunability. Typically, unlike the conventional liquid crystal laser, the proposed laser can be fabricated by simply coating the material on a single substrate, which will simplify the production process and broaden the application of liquid crystal laser. The studies reveal that the molecular conformation transition of a photosensitive chiral switch during isomerization leads to changes in not only the molecular geometry and the direction of dipole moment, but also the molecular interactions and the miscibility of the materials. These changes cause the rearrangement of liquid crystals, thus rendering the variation of helical twisted power and achieving tuning on the photonic band-edge of the chiral liquid crystal, consequently forming a photo-tunable laser.
