Mixed Micellization of Cationic/Anionic Surfactants: Role of Matching Water Affinities between Oppositely Charged Headgroups and That between Oppositely Charged Constituent Counterions

To explore the role of matching water affinities between the oppositely charged headgroups, the micellization of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTA+Br-)/sodium dodecanoate (Na+L-) mixed system and the CTA+Br-/sodium dodecylsulfonate (Na+AS-) mixed system has been investigated by the surface tension method and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. In comparison with the CTA+Br-/Na+L- system, the CTA+Br-/Na+AS- system shows stronger micelle formation ability, smaller critical micelle concentration (cmc), and stronger synergistic effect arising from the higher degree of matching water affinities between the headgroups CTA+ and AS-. To explore the role of matching water affinities between the oppositely charged constituent counterions, the micellization of CTA+X-/Y+L- mixed systems with various counterions has been investigated. The higher degree of matching water affinities between counterions X- and Y+ and the higher degree of mismatching water affinities between headgroups and counterions are unfavorable to the screening effect of counterions on the electrostatic attraction between headgroups CTA+ and L-, leading to stronger micelle formation ability and smaller cmc and vice versa. MD simulation results also indicate that, for the mixed micellization of cationic/anionic surfactants, the role of matching water affinities between oppositely charged headgroups is more important than that between oppositely charged constituent counterions.

Effects of organo-clay and sodium dodecyl sulfonate intercalated layered double hydroxide on thermal and flame behaviour of intumescent flame retarded polypropylene

The thermal and flame performances of intumescent flame retarded polypropylene (PP/IFR) composites with organically modified clay or sodium dodecyl sulfonate intercalated layered double hydroxide (SDS-LDH) were studied. The organo-clay particles were partially exfoliated in the PP matrix, while intercalation and aggregation was obtained for SDS-LDH. Incorporation of SDS-LDH improved the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the intumescent flame retarded PP composite in the early stage of heating and combustion; while the effects of organo-clay came into play in the middle-later stage. Differences in degradation pathway of clay and LDH were responsible for the above phenomenon which bore important implication for the barrier mechanism. The introduction of organo-clay into PP/IFR not only increased the char residue, but also formed compact and folded morphology of char residue which provided more effective protect for underlying materials against heat and oxygen relative to LDH, thus improved the flame retardancy of intumescent flame retarded PP samples more efficiently.

General procedure: In a typical synthesis of DA-La(PW11)2, an aqueous solution of (2.0 g, 0.31 mmol) K-La(PW11)2 was dropped into a chloroform solution of (1.1 g, 3.75 mmol) DA-Br. A white precipitate formed after the addition of the whole K-La(PW11)2 aqueous solution and then the product was separated after a further 1 h of stirring. The product was washed twice with H2O and dried in air [9]. DDA-La(PW11)2, TDA-La(PW11)2, HDA-La(PW11)2 and ODA-La(PW11)2 were prepared with a similar procedure. In the 1H NMR spectra, the singlet peak at 2.5 ppm and 3.3 ppm is assigned to be DMSO-d6, and the water in DMSO-d6, respectively.
