A series of bis-hydroxyamides were synthesized from diphenylamine-2,2?-dicarboxylic acid and chiral aminoalcohols. Their catalytic activity in asymmetric borane reduction was investigated. After the fine optimization of solvents, temperature, amount of borane complex, and the length of catalyst generating period, good to excellent yields (55-99%) and enantioselectivities (79-97% ee) can be achieved in the reduction of aromatic and alkyl prochiral ketones. A transition state structure was proposed on the basis of absolute configuration and controlled experiment.

Novel P-stereogenic bis-phosphoramidite pincer palladium complexes 1 and 2 derived from (S)-(-)-alpha,alpha-diphenyl-2-pyrrolidinemethanol and (S)-(+)-indolinemethanol, respectively, were synthesized in reasonable yields (i.e., 55-62%) by using a flexible, modular synthetic approach and were characterized by X-ray crystal structure determination. Reacting (S)-(+)-indolinemethanol with PCl3 leads to the formation of a novel P-chiral building block, which exhibits good thermal stability of its stereochemical features. This enabled the design and development of new P-chiral bisphosphoramidite pincer arene ligands and their corresponding metal complexes. The molecular structure of the new indolinemethanol-derived phosphoramidite pincer metal complex screens quadrants I and III, which is in contrast to the previously reported L-proline-derived P-chiral ligands that screen quadrants II and IV. The bis-phosphoramidite pincer palladium, complexes 1 and 2 are active catalysts for asymmetric homoallylation of sulfonimines, where low (ee 33%) or no enantioselectivity was observed for reactions catalyzed by 2 and 1, respectively. Preliminary catalytic results revealed that enantiomeric excess values varied by using differently functionalized sulfonimines, suggesting that, both electronic properties and steric congestion of sulfonimines affect, the transition state of the electrophilic attack of the 1nallyl Pd intermediate in the allylation.

An efficient bimetallic Zn(II)/Cu(I)-mediated asymmetric synthesis of simple axially chiral allenes from terminal alkynes and aldehydes was realized by taking advantage of the chiral amine (S)-alpha,alpha-diphenylprolinol 3. This one-pot procedure is compatible with broad scopes of both terminal alkynes and aldehydes, providing axially chiral allenes in practical yields with an excellent enantioselectivity. Control experiments revealed that CuBr is responsible for the efficient formation of propargylic amine while the combination of CuBr and ZnBr2 plays crucial roles in the amine-to-allene transformation.

New catalytic enantioselective reduction systems were prepared from aminoalcohols and dialkylboranes, for the enantioselective reductions of prochiral aromatic ketones. Among these, the system prepared from (-)-alpha,alpha-diphenylpyrrolidinemethanol with 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane proved especially promising for such reductions. This complex catalyzes the reduction of prochiral aralkyl ketones to the corresponding alcohols with BH3-THF, with enantioselectivities 82-99.2%. Also, this catalyst is particularly effective for the more hindered and substituted aralkyl ketones. Various modifications in this new catalytic reduction system, such as changing reaction conditions, reducing agent and dialkylborane, were also examined.
