The toxic effects of five Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs) that are widely used as active ingredients in personal care products were assessed using the bioluminescent bacterium Aliivibrio fischeri (formerly Vibrio fischeri) (Microtox test system). The experimental results showed a relevant toxicity for almost all of the single QACs, with IC50 values lower than 1 mg L-1. Analysis of the mode of action through the application of the Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) models indicated an a-specific reactivity for most of the QACs toward A. fischeri. Only hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (ATMAC-16) behaved as a polar-narcotic, with a low reactivity toward the bacterial cell membrane. The concentration response curves of the different binary and multicomponent mixtures of QACs were also evaluated with respect to the predictions from the Concentration Addition (CA) and Independent Action (IA) models. For almost all of the binary and multicomponent mixtures (7 out of 11 mixtures tested), an agreement between the experimental and predicted ICx was observed and confirmed via application of the Model Deviation Ratio (MDR). In four cases, some deviations from the expected behaviour were observed (potential antagonistic and synergistic interactions) at concentrations on the order of hundreds of mug L-1, which could be of environmental concern, especially in the case of synergistic effects. The analysis of aquatic ecotoxicity data and the few available values of the measured environmental concentrations (MECs) from the literature for wastewaters and receiving waterbodies suggest that a potential risk toward aquatic life cannot be excluded.

A series of novel cationic gemini surfactants, CnH2n+1N+(CH3)2CH 2CHOHCHOHCH2N+(CH3)2 CnH2n+1 · 2Br-, have been synthesized, and their surface properties were investigated in water, 0.1 N NaCl, and 0.1 N NaBr at 25C. From surface tension-log molar concentration plots, the pC20, critical micelle concentration (CMC), and gammaCMc values have been determined, and the area/molecule at the aqueous solution/air interface was calculated. When the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl (hydrophobic) chains is above a certain number, which depends upon the molecular environment, the surface activity of the compounds is less than expected. This paper describes the measuring procedure which enables overcoming the base difficulty in application of the vibrating plate (VP) technique to measuring electric surface potential (DeltaV) of free solution surfaces, namely loosing the zero level set for the reference sample (water) while replacing it with the solution measured. Main improvement in the measuring procedure is achieved by (i) applying a flow for exchanging the reference sample with the measured solution and (ii) elimination of an error driven by dependency of the measuring signal on the air gap width. The air gap width is fixed by contact of the bottom edge of a platinum Wilhelmy plate with the solution surface which the plate is simultaneously used for measurement of the surface pressure (Pi). The results received with the new methodology for n-decanoic acid, n-decyl-trimethylammonium bromide (C10TABr) and sodium n-dodecyl sulphate (SLS) are discussed.

This paper presents the adaptation of Escherichia coli Gram-negative bacteria to increased concentrations of ionic liquids. Theophylline-based quaternary ammonium salts were used as an example of an ionic liquid that on the one hand includes an anion of natural origin and on the other hand is characterized by amphiphilic properties due to aliphatic chains in its structure. Theophylline-based ionic liquids can be synthesized relatively cheaply and easily and can exhibit strong antibacterial properties depending on the alkyl chain length. These compounds can also strongly affect bacterial membrane properties, including changes in electrokinetic potential as well as net surface charge. The experiments performed in this study succeeded in obtaining bacterial cultures growing at a tetradecyltrimethylammonium theophyllinate concentration three times higher than the minimum inhibition and bactericidal concentration. The adapted bacteria were characterized by intriguing changes in morphology and grew in the form of almost one-millimeter spheres in a liquid medium. It was shown that cultivation of adapted bacteria with tetradecyltrimethylammonium theophyllinate resulted in changes in the lipid membrane composition and protein patterns of the bacterial lysates, depending on the ionic liquid concentration. This study also revealed that such bacterial adaptation can increase sensitivity to antibiotics by affecting membrane properties like ionophores. These results can be potentially important with regard to synergistic or antagonistic action with other bactericidal compounds like antibiotics and nanoparticles.

The physicochemical properties of aqueous surfactant mixtures containing a nonionic fluorosurfactant (undecafluoro-n-pentyl-decaoxyethylene ether (C5F11EO10)) and various amounts of a cationic surfactant (decyltrimethylammonium bromide (DeTAB)) were determined by surface tension and conductivity measurements. All values of the critical micelle concentrations of the mixtures turn out to be smaller than those of both pure surfactants revealing the presence of a significant synergy for all DeTAB proportions in the mixed system. The analysis of the experimental data was performed on the basis of three different well established thermodynamic models of mixed micelle formation to determine several relevant parameters, especially the micelle composition, the interaction parameters, and the free energy of micelle formation. The results indicate that the dominant interactions between DeTAB and C5F11EO10 molecules are attractive. The main reason for this behavior could be attributed to the complexation between the polyoxyethylene chain of C5F11EO10 and the quaternary ammonium group of DeTAB giving rise to stable structures.
