A full account of our concise and enantioselective total syntheses of all known (-)-trigonoliimine alkaloids is described. Our retrobiosynthetic analysis of these natural products enabled identification of a single bistryptamine precursor as a precursor to all known trigonoliimines through a sequence of transformations involving asymmetric oxidation and reorganization. Our enantioselective syntheses of these alkaloids enabled the revision of the absolute stereochemistry of (-)-trigonoliimines A, B, and C. We report that trigonoliimines A, B, C and structurally related compounds showed weak anticancer activities against HeLa and U-937 cells.

Herein, we report the coordination self-assembly of strongly luminescent lanthanide-organic tetrahedral Ln4L4 cages with a series of tris(tridentate) ligands based on the triazole chelates. Among them, the new ligand L3 with triazole-pyridine-triazole (TPT) chelates manifests an excellent sensitization toward all of the lanthanide ions (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) that emit in both the visible and near-infrared regions, with a record luminescent quantum yield for Tb4(L3)4 (phi = 82%) being obtained. In contrast, ligands with amido-pyridine-triazole (APT) or TPA chelates show much weaker sensitization ability. Energy levels for all ligands were measured, and TD-DFT calculations were employed to shed light on the sensitization mechanism. Finally, white-light emission systems formed by combining the desired luminescent compounds have been demonstrated. Our strongly luminescent LOPs provide new candidates for photochemical supramolecular devices.

The present work focuses on highly selective ligands for An III/LnIII separation: bis(triazinyl)bipyridines (BTBPs). By combining time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy, nanoelectrospray ionization mass spectrometry, vibronic sideband spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, we obtain a detailed picture of the structure and stoichiometry of the first coordination sphere of EuIII-BTBP complexes in an octanolic solution. The main focus is on the 1:2 complexes because extraction studies revealed that those are the species extracted into the organic phase. The investigations on europium(III) complexes of BTBP with different triazin alkylation revealed differences in the formed complexes due to the bulkiness of the ligands. Because of the vibronic sidebands in the fluorescence spectra, we were able to detect whether or not nitrate ligands are coordinated in the first coordination sphere of the Eu-BTBP complexes. In solution, less sterically demanding BTBP offers enough space for additional coordination of anions and/or solvent molecules to form 9-coordinated Eu-BTBP 1:2 complexes, while bulkier ligands tend to form 8-fold-coordinated structures. We also report the first crystal structure of a Ln-BTBP 1:2 complex and that of its 1:1 complex, both of which are 10-coordinated.

In this manuscript a new and improved multicomponent process for the chemical synthesis of the title compounds is described. beta-Dicarbonyl and activated cyanomethylene compounds, and aromatic, aliphatic or alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes have been subjected to a three-component reaction under the catalysis of ytterbium triflate hydrate under solvent-free conditions at 50 C, and by application of microwaves and ultrasounds. Of the three methodologies employed, the reaction in neat performed in a flask with magnetic stirring proved to be by far the most efficient, providing the desired adducts in very good yields (85?91%). The experimental protocol set-up in this study was applied without significant differences in terms of yields to aromatic aldehydes having electron withdrawing or electron-donating substituents, as well as to aliphatic and alpha,beta-unsaturated ones. Moreover ytterbium triflate has been easily recovered from each reaction media and reused without appreciable loss of its catalytic activity.
